How to propagate: Kalanchoe

Kalanchoe is a succulent, which makes it an easy plant to take care of. A succulent loves to stores water in its leaves. This saves you time and water. There are around 125 species of the Kalanchoe family. In addition to succulents, most Kalanchoes are flowering plants.

Taking cuttings from a Kalanchoe is just as easy as taking care of them. The only thing to take into account is that growing cuttings of a Kalanchoe takes a long time.

Propagating a Kalanchoe in 3 steps

Step 1: Disinfect

First clean the knife you might be using.

Keep the knife under hot water and clean them well. This prevents you from unnecessarily transferring bacteria during the propagation.

Do you happen to have disinfectant or pure alcohol? Disinfect the tools after using hot water. Let's get away with those bacteria and fungi!

Step 2: Take cuttings

The propagation of a Kalanchoe can be done by carefully cutting of a stem with a couple of leaves. Do not pull while cutting the stem off. Make sure that the stem is completely loose, so that you won't damage the cutting.

Step 3: Taking care of the cutting

Get a decorative pot with fresh soil. Put the cutting of the Kalanchoe in a pot with soil. Make sure that no leaves are touching the soil. If there are some leaves touching the soil, it's best to remove the bottom leaves.

It is important to not water them at the beginning. What you can do is, spraying the cuttings with a plant sprayer.

After a couple of weeks (+3 weeks) you can keep the soil of the cutting slightly moist. It's import to only give a small amount of water.
