EnglishDieffenbachia is a beautiful plant with bold leaf patterns. Luckily, it is also easy to propagate. The best part? You can watch the roots grow right in water.
A healthy Dieffenbachia
Sharp knife or scissors
Disinfectant or pure alcohol
Glass or jar with water
Optional: rooting powder
Wash your knife or scissors thoroughly with hot water and soap. If you have alcohol or disinfectant at home, use that too for extra hygiene.
Pick a healthy stem and cut just above the leaves. The stem should be at least 15 cm long.
If you have rooting powder, apply it to the cut and let it dry. No rooting powder? No worries. The cutting will root just fine without it, although rooting powder may speed things up.
Fill a clean glass or jar with water and place your cutting inside. Make sure no leaves touch the water, or they might start to rot.
If needed, remove any leaves that are too low.
Change the water once a week. You’ll see roots appear within 2 to 4 weeks.
Once the roots are at least 5 cm long, pot your cutting in fresh soil.
Yes, but water propagation is easier and lets you keep an eye on the roots. Only switch to soil once roots are well developed.
