Propagating Epipremnum & Scindapsus

Epipremnum and Scindapsus are popular trailing plants for a reason. They're easy to care for and even easier to propagate. Thanks to their aerial roots, you can grow new plants in no time.

Thinking of propagating yours? Here’s a simple guide to help you multiply your plants step by step.

Rinse your knife or scissors under hot water and a bit of soap. Then disinfect with alcohol to avoid spreading bacteria or fungi.

Choose a healthy stem with at least one leaf, ideally with an aerial root. Cut it about five centimetres below the root.

No aerial root? Cut just below a node at an angle. This increases the chance of root growth.

Put the cutting in a glass or vase of water. Make sure no leaves touch the water. If they do, remove them to prevent rot.

Once the roots are at least ten centimetres long, you can move the cutting to a pot with fresh soil.

Place it in a bright spot without direct sunlight. Water lightly and let the soil dry out in between.

• When: ideal in spring or summer
• Light: bright spot, out of direct sun
• Water: change the water weekly
• Aerial roots: speed up rooting
• Tip: use several cuttings for a fuller plant

Yes, but it’s less reliable. Make sure to cut below a node and place the cutting straight into water.
