Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) propagation

The Peace Lily, also known as Spathiphyllum, is not only beautiful but also one of the best air purifying houseplants. Because this plant is so popular, we totally get why you want to grow more of them. Luckily, it is quite easy to do, even if you are not a plant expert.

What do you need?

  • Healthy Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
  • Sharp scissors or knife
  • Disinfectant or pure alcohol
  • Old towel
  • Pot with fresh potting soil

Propagating a Peace Lily in 4 steps

1. Clean your tools

Use a clean sharp knife or strong scissors. Rinse under hot water, dry with a clean towel and disinfect with alcohol. This helps prevent bacteria or fungi from harming your cuttings.

2. Gently remove the plant from the pot

Gently remove the plant from its pot and loosen the soil around the roots. This makes it easier to see where to divide the plant and avoids damage to the roots.

3. Divide the plant into cuttings

Split the root ball into sections. If needed, rinse the roots with lukewarm water to make separation easier. Can’t do it by hand? Use a clean knife. Make sure each new plant has some roots and a few leaves.

4. Pot the new plants

Put each division into a pot with fresh soil. Press the soil down gently and water lightly. Place the pots in bright but indirect sunlight and keep the soil slightly moist.
