How do you take care of a Fatsia Japonica?

Location

Fatsia Japonica thrives in indirect light or partial shade. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while too little light may slow its growth. A spot near a north-facing window or a few metres away from an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Outdoors, it does well in a sheltered, partially shaded location.

Watering

This plant likes consistently moist soil. Water it about once a week, adjusting based on temperature and humidity. Always check if the top layer of soil feels dry before watering. During winter, reduce watering slightly. Ensure excess water can drain away to prevent root rot.

Plant nutrition

Feed your Fatsia Japonica once a month during the growing season, from spring to autumn, using a general-purpose liquid fertiliser. During winter, the plant doesn't require feeding, as it enters a resting phase.

Repotting

Repot your Fatsia Japonica every 2 to 3 years or when it outgrows its pot. Use a larger pot with fresh, well-draining soil to provide the plant with enough room and nutrients. Spring is the best time to repot, as the plant is ready to grow again.

Temperature

This plant prefers temperatures between 15 and 24 degrees Celsius. Avoid draughty areas and sudden temperature changes. Outdoors, Fatsia Japonica can tolerate short periods of light frost, but prolonged cold can cause damage.

Pruning

Pruning isn’t essential but can help keep the plant compact and well-shaped. Remove yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain its health. You can also trim the tips of stems to encourage bushier growth.

Diseases and peculiarities

Fatsia Japonica is generally resistant to pests and diseases, but it can occasionally attract spider mites or aphids. Check the leaves regularly and treat any infestations with a lukewarm shower or an organic pest control solution.

With its bold foliage and easy care, the Fatsia Japonica is a stunning addition to any home, bringing a natural, lush vibe to your space!
