How to care for a Licuala Grandis

Location

The Licuala Grandis enjoys a bright spot with indirect sunlight. Place it near a window facing east or west. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. A spot with partial shade is also suitable as long as the plant gets enough light to grow.

Watering

The Ruffled Fan Palm has a higher water requirement than some other palms. Water it twice a week during the summer to keep the soil lightly moist. Let the top layer of soil dry out slightly between waterings. In winter, you can water less often, but make sure the soil doesn’t dry out completely.

Plant nutrition

In spring and summer, feed your Licuala Grandis once a month with a liquid fertiliser designed for houseplants. This will help keep the leaves healthy and vibrant. In autumn and winter, it’s unnecessary to fertilise, as the plant grows slower during these months.

Repotting

The Licuala Grandis grows slowly, but should be repotted every two to three years. Use a light, well-draining potting mix and choose a pot that’s slightly larger than its current one. The best time to repot is in spring, when the plant starts actively growing.

Temperature

This palm prefers temperatures between 18 and 27°C. Protect it from drafts and cold temperatures below 15°C. A warm, stable environment is ideal for the Licuala Grandis.

Pruning

Pruning isn’t necessary for the Ruffled Fan Palm. Simply remove any brown or yellow leaves to keep the plant looking neat and encourage new growth. Never cut into healthy, green leaves, as this can slow the plant’s growth.

Diseases and peculiarities

The Licuala Grandis is sensitive to dry air, which can cause brown leaf edges. Regularly mist the leaves to increase humidity around the plant. Also, check for pests like spider mites or scale, especially in dry conditions.

With its large, impressive leaves and easy care, the Licuala Grandis makes a stunning addition to any home!
