How to care for a Trachycarpus Fortunei

Location

The Trachycarpus Fortunei thrives in a bright spot without direct sunlight. Indoors, place it in an area with indirect sunlight, such as near an east- or west-facing window. Outdoors, it prefers partial shade or a spot where it is shielded from full sun for part of the day.

Watering

This palm requires moderate watering. Water it once or twice a week, depending on its location and the season. Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot. Let the top layer of soil dry out before watering again. During winter, reduce watering since the plant grows less actively.

Plant nutrition

Feed the Trachycarpus Fortunei once a month during the growing season, from spring to autumn, using a general-purpose fertiliser or a specific palm fertiliser. There’s no need to feed it in winter when the plant is dormant.

Repotting

Repot the Trachycarpus Fortunei every 3–4 years or when it outgrows its current pot. Choose a pot that’s at least 20% larger than the current one and use well-draining, airy soil. Spring is the ideal time for repotting, as the plant enters its active growth phase.

Temperature

The Trachycarpus Fortunei is a hardy palm that can withstand outdoor temperatures as low as -15°C. Indoors, it does best in a temperature range of 12–25°C. Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations and draughts, as these can stress the plant.

Pruning

Pruning is rarely necessary for the Trachycarpus Fortunei. Remove lower leaves only when they turn brown or die. Use sharp and clean scissors or pruners to avoid damaging the trunk.

Diseases and peculiarities

The Trachycarpus Fortunei is a robust plant with minimal susceptibility to pests. Occasionally, spider mites or mealybugs may appear, particularly in dry air. Check the leaves regularly and treat any infestations with a biological insecticide or by giving the plant a gentle, lukewarm shower.

With its striking appearance and low-maintenance care needs, the Trachycarpus Fortunei is a fantastic choice for both indoor and outdoor settings.
