The Chamaerops Humilis, also known as the European fan palm, is a compact and hardy palm that naturally grows in southern Europe. It is the only palm species native to Europe and is well known for its tough nature. With its fan shaped leaves, multiple trunks and Mediterranean look, it is a great way to bring atmosphere to your garden or patio.
What makes this palm so popular is how resilient it is. It can handle wind, full sun and dry conditions. On top of that, the Chamaerops Humilis is one of the most cold hardy palms you can grow in our climate. Whether planted in the ground or in a big pot, it will thrive as long as it gets enough light.
This palm grows slowly and stays fairly compact, making it perfect for smaller gardens, patios and balconies.
This palm is easy to look after. With the right spot and a bit of care, it is a strong plant that will last for years.
The Chamaerops prefers full sun, but it can also cope with partial shade. The more sunlight it gets, the more compact and strong the plant will grow.
This palm is fairly hardy and can handle temperatures down to around minus ten degrees Celsius. If there is long or heavy frost, it is a good idea to protect the plant a bit, especially when it is in a pot. Wrap the roots and maybe the trunk with fleece or bubble wrap.
Water regularly, especially during warm and dry spells. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings. The Chamaerops is drought tolerant, but young plants have shallow roots and can dry out more quickly.
You usually do not need to prune this palm. You can remove old brown leaves to keep it looking tidy. Use sharp secateurs and maybe wear gloves, as the leaf stems can be a bit spiky.
The Chamaerops Humilis is not toxic to people or pets. However, the leaves can have sharp tips, so take care when moving or pruning the plant.
