Washingtonia robusta and Washingtonia filifera are popular fan palms that bring instant tropical vibes to gardens, conservatories and patios. They stand out with tall trunks and big fan shaped leaves that rustle in the breeze.
Washingtonia robusta, also known as the Mexican fan palm, is native to Baja California and northern Mexico. Washingtonia filifera, also known as the California fan palm, comes from the south west of the United States. In warm regions they can grow very tall. In our climate they stay smaller, yet they are fast for a palm.
Give your palm a sunny position. More sun means better and faster growth. A bright conservatory also works well.
Robusta handles cold down to about minus four degrees Celsius. Filifera handles cold down to about minus eight degrees Celsius. During severe or prolonged frost protect roots with mulch and wrap the trunk with fleece. In pots add extra protection because the root ball freezes more quickly.
Water regularly through the growing season. Keep soil slightly moist but avoid waterlogging. In winter water less, especially in a cool spot.
Use free draining fertile soil. Feed in spring and summer from time to time with a palm fertiliser for strong growth.
Remove old brown fronds close to the trunk to keep things tidy. Leave young green fronds on the plant.
Washingtonia is not toxic to people or pets. Wear gloves when pruning as leaf stalks can have sharp edges.
