Description

The Actinidia deliciosa – better known as the kiwi plant – is a climbing plant with big green leaves and (if you’re lucky) delicious fruit. A tropical touch for your own garden!

Origin

This plant originally comes from China, but it’s now a familiar face in gardens all over the world. It does especially well in sunny spots.

Care

In spring and summer, water it about 1–2 times a week. During hot, dry spells, a bit more often. In autumn and winter, you only need to water when the soil feels dry. Prune it in early spring to keep it compact and to encourage new growth.

Light & placement

Pop it in a sunny spot – the more sun, the better. It needs plenty of light to be able to grow kiwi fruit.

Pet & child safety

The kiwi plant isn’t toxic to people or pets. But the skin and seeds might be a bit harsh on sensitive tummies, so it’s best not to let your pets nibble on them.

Fun facts

To harvest kiwi fruit, you usually need both a male and a female plant. Unless you’ve got a self-pollinating variety – then it does all the work for you!
