    All about the Phoenix Canariensis

The Phoenix Canariensis, also known as the Canary Island date palm, is a palm with v shaped leaves. This outdoor palm brings instant Mediterranean vibes to your garden or patio. With its thick trunk, graceful leaves and strong presence, it is a real eye catcher.

As the name suggests, the Phoenix Canariensis originally comes from the Canary Islands. There, it grows into a massive tree that can reach ten to fifteen metres tall. In our climate it stays smaller, but with good care and enough space it can still grow impressively large.

The Phoenix Canariensis grows slowly but needs a fair amount of water. As it matures, the trunk becomes thicker and sturdier over time.

How to care for a Phoenix Canariensis

The Phoenix Canariensis is a tough plant but it does love some sun and warmth. Give it the right spot and care, and it will be a low maintenance palm you can enjoy for years.

    Sunlight

This palm loves full sun. The more light it gets, the better and faster it grows. A sheltered spot out of the wind helps keep the leaves looking nice.

    Temperature and hardiness

The Phoenix Canariensis is moderately hardy. It can handle temperatures down to around minus five degrees Celsius, especially if the frost is short and the weather stays dry. In harsher frost, you will need to protect the plant, especially if it is in a pot. Wrap the trunk with fleece and cover the roots with mulch or bubble wrap.

During very cold winters, it is safer to move potted plants to a sheltered or frost free spot.

    Watering

Give the Phoenix Canariensis regular water during the growing season, especially in warm and dry weather. Keep the soil slightly moist but do not let it get soggy. In winter, water less often, especially if the plant is kept somewhere cool.

    Pruning

You can cut off old brown leaves at the base of the trunk. Always leave younger green leaves, as they still feed the plant.

    Toxicity

The Phoenix Canariensis is not toxic to people or pets. However, the leaves can be sharp, so take care when moving or pruning the plant.
