    What is a terrarium?

Are you not so good with houseplants? Then perhaps a terrarium is something for you! A terrarium is an area containing organisms that live in a certain environment. The most important thing is that the area and the organisms form a unity. They extract nutrients from the existing environment. So the plants in a terrarium don’t need your help!

How do you create a terrarium?

Making your own terrarium is not only easy, but also fun to do! Even in an office space. The only accessory you need is a glass vase, toilet bowl or a lockable glass pot. What you put in the lockable environment is up to you. We do recommend the use of hydro grains, active charcoal, potting soil and tropical plants. By being able to close off the environment you create a self-sustaining terrarium. Nothing else is needed!

Create your own terrarium? That’s easy!

Have you found the glass lockable pot? Then you can get to work. Make sure you clean the glass casing properly. You can do this with hot water and green soap. When your glass jar is clean you can fill it with soil. This can be made from stones, charcoal, moss and earth, but also a combination of.

Stones are important for the water in your territory. So your plants won’t have wet feet all the time! Charcoal is to prevent mold. Once you have formed the habitat of your plants, you can add plants. Pour a little rainwater into the terrarium, and let it vent for a week without a cork or lid. After this you can close the terrarium. That’s it!

How do you take care of a terrarium?

In short? I don’t. You don’t take care of a terrarium, and there’s one big reason for that. Once you open a closed terrarium after a long time, it can disrupt the situation in the terrarium. Because air suddenly enters the terrarium, the humidity in the air decreases. And that can cause a lot of change!

The terrarium gets out of balance, plants suddenly get more air and the humidity decreases. This new situation can cause plants to die. Moulds can even develop. Conclusion? After the terrarium has been closed, it is better to stay away from the lid.

Which plants are suitable for a terrarium?

Since the environment in a terrarium is always humid, it is best to add tropical plants. These plants can withstand high humidity and often have few requirements.

We recommend the following plants: Ferns such as the Phlebodium, a small Calathea, Grasslily, Leaf Begonia, Syngonium Neon Robusta, Spoon plant, carnivorous plants or the Velvet plant. These plants are accustomed to high humidity and can live without extra nutrition.

    Hydro grains

These are grains made of clay that absorb excess water. In a homemade terrarium, the first layer often consists of these hydro grains. This ensures that no layer of water remains at the bottom of the pot. Do you omit the hydro grains? Then make sure that no layer of water remains in the pot. Do you do this? Then the plants can suffer from root rot.

    Active charcoal

You probably don’t have it lying around at home: active charcoal. Yet this is an indispensable ingredient for your homemade terrarium. Active charcoal, like hydro grains, absorbs excess water, but it also absorbs fungi and other bacteria. In this way, you create a terrarium without moulds.

    Moss

Would you like your terrarium to look tropical? Then add a layer of moss between the plants. Moisten this moss beforehand with a plant syringe. The moisture will cause the moss to create roots. The moss will probably not grow in height, but it will grow in thickness. The moss creates an environment that you also find in the jungle.
