Grow your own avocado plant from seed

The massive demand for avocados causes some problems. But we are happy to help you with that! You can easily grow your own avocado plant. You don’t actually propagate an avocado plant, but you just grow one from seed. We’ll explain how!

Supplies

  • Avocado
  • Scissors or knife
  • Disinfectant
  • Kitchen paper
  • Plastic (sandwich) bag
  • 4 sticks or toothpicks
  • Glass or vase with water

Grow an Avocado plant in 4 steps

Step 1: Prepare the seed

Firstly, get the seed out of an avocado. It's important to leave the brown layer on the seed.

Position the seed with its layer in a glass with water for 24 hours.

Step 2: Remove the brown layer

After 24 hours, get the seed out of the water. Remove the brown layer of the seed carefully.

Wrap a moist kitchen paper around the seed. Put the paper with the seed in the plastic bag.

Place the bag on a location with room temperature. After about 3 weeks you will see that the seed has cracked open and roots have formed. In between you can check if the kitchen paper is still moist. Without moisture the seed will not germinate properly.

Step 3: Place the seed in water

When the seed has opened, and roots have formed you can get the seed out of its plastic bag.

Take four sticks or thooth picks. These sticks need to be in the middle of the seed (see picture above). Are the sticks firmly attached? Then you can fill a vase or glass with water and let the seed ‘hang’ in the glass. Make sure you have the bottom of the seed in the water, up to about the middle of the seed. You can always add water or pour it away.

Leave the seed in the water until the roots are strong enough to form a stem with leaves.

Step 4: Taking care of the cutting

As soon as your avocado plant has developed firm roots, and you see its stem growing, leaves will quickly appear. As soon as this happens you can repot the plant to soil. Put the avocado plant in a nice flowerpot. Make sure that the soil is always slightly moist.
