A closed and self-sustaining plant terrarium is a miniature ecosystem within a glass vase, pot, jar or bottle. In a balanced terrarium, plants, soil, substrate, water, air, and sunlight work together to be nearly self-sustaining.
When we refer to a self-sustaining terrarium, we mean that the plants need no outside help to grow and survive, apart from energy from sunlight. Through the process of photosynthesis, plants produce their own nutrients (glucose) and oxygen. For photosynthesis, plants need sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide (CO2), which they convert into nutrients and oxygen. Despite living in a closed environment, the plants will not lack nutrition and oxygen.
Plants absorb water through their roots and then evaporate it through small pores called stomata on their leaves, a process also known as transpiration. This transpiration eventually leads to condensation and droplet formation. As these droplets slide down the glass, the water is reabsorbed by the roots in the soil. Together with photosynthesis, this creates a cycle, allowing a balanced terrarium to be nearly self-sustaining. Once every six months, it may be necessary to add a little water to the terrarium, but if that's all?
A plant terrarium is easy to care for and maintain. However, it is important to choose the right location and keep an eye on the moisture balance within your closed terrarium.
